Sri Lanka’s gem history dates back over 2,500 years, earning the island its ancient name Ratna-Dweepa, meaning Gem Island, due to its natural gem wealth. Ancient travellers like Marco Polo noted that Sri Lanka had the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other gemstones in the world. Ptolemy, the 2nd-century astronomer, recorded that sapphire and beryl were key to Sri Lanka’s gem industry, while sailors who visited the island carried back “jewels of Serendib,” the ancient name given to Sri Lanka by Persian and Middle Eastern traders crossing the Indian Ocean to trade gems during the 4th and 5th centuries.
Geologically, Sri Lanka is an ancient land, with 90% of its rocks of Precambrian age, dating back 560 million to 2,400 million years. Gemstones in Sri Lanka are found in sedimentary residual gem deposits, eluvial deposits, metamorphic deposits, skarn, and calcium-rich rocks, while some gems are of magmatic origin. Residual deposits are mainly located in the flood plains of rivers and streams, while metamorphic gem deposits constitute 90% of the country’s gem resources. Sri Lanka has one of the highest densities of gem deposits relative to its land area, with Ratnapura, meaning “City of Gems,” being the most famous gem mining region on the island.
Sri Lanka’s blue sapphires, known as Ceylon Sapphires, are renowned for their unique colour, clarity, and lustre compared to sapphires from other parts of the world, continuing to maintain the island’s reputation as a leading source of fine gemstones to this day.
